    DUBAI: Countries in the Middle East continue to take extra precautionary measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, as the virus infects more than one million globally.

    18:10 - Thailand has temporarily banned all passenger flights from landing in the country to curb the outbreak of the new coronavirus, the country's aviation agency said on Friday.
    The ban on incoming flights came into effect on Friday morning and will run until the end of Monday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said in an order published late on Friday.
    Anyone arriving on a flight that took off before the order came into effect will need to be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in Thailand, the order said.

    18:10 - France on Friday reported 588 more coronavirus deaths in hospital, its biggest toll over the last 24 hours since the epidemic began.
    The new deaths brought to 5,091 the total number of people who have died in hospital of COVID-19 in France, top health official Jerome Salomon told reporters.
    There is no daily toll for those who died of COVID-19 in old people's homes in France. But Salomon said that a total of 1,416 people had died in such establishments from COVID-19 in the epidemic. This brings the total French toll to at least 6,507.

    16:45 - Turkey's death toll from the coronavirus outbreak increased by 69 to 425 on Friday, while the number of confirmed cases from the disease rose by 2,786 to 20,921.

    16:25 - Italy records 766 new coronavirus deaths bringing the total to 14,681 - just higher than the tally of 760 fatalities a day earlier.

    15:45 - A United Nations rights official on Friday voiced concern over prisoners after reports of unrest in facilities prompted by worries over a coronavirus outbreak in countries including Iran, one of the worst-hit in the world.
    Iranian media have reported unrest in several prisons, and a mass escape from a facility in the west of the country, despite the temporary release of some 100,000 inmates to curb prison overcrowding.
    "As you see in Iran and some other countries, we are seeing riots, prisoners who are afraid, who are distressed at the big loss of contact from family members and so on. So there are many, many issues surrounding this," UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a virtual briefing in Geneva.

    14:58 - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Friday renewed his call for a global ceasefire, urging all parties to conflict to lay down arms and allow war-torn nations to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
    "The worst is yet to come," Guterres said, referring to countries beset with fighting like Syria, Libya and Yemen.
    "The COVID-19 storm is now coming to all these theatres of conflict."
    Guterres said there had been some progress following his March 23 call for peace, but that fighting still rages in a number of countries, hampering officials' ability to put into place plans to combat the virus.
    "The need is urgent," Guterres said at a UN press conference.
    "The virus has shown how swiftly it can move across borders, devastate countries and upend lives."
